Your finished project
A continuous-grain mitred box
Plan the grain so it flows around the box, construct clean reinforced corners, fit the bottom and lid, and complete the piece with an elegant Japanese-style handle.
What you will learn.
Move from precise preparation to carefully fitted joinery and a protective finish.
Continuous grain
Lay out and prepare material so the grain flows naturally around the finished box.
Mitres and splines
Cut clean mitred corners and reinforce them with keyed or splined joints.
Rabbets and tenons
Fit the bottom and lid, then create through-wedged round tenons for the handle.
Traditional shellac
Prepare the surfaces and apply shellac to add protection, warmth and depth.

Meet Payam.
Designer, maker and teacher
Payam Alinasab is a furniture designer and maker with an engineering background and years of experience in architecture and construction. He founded Payam Alinasab Design in 2019, focusing on traditional joinery and timeless woodworking methods.
His work centres on sustainable, handcrafted pieces and the connection between natural materials, craftsmanship and the people who use them. As an instructor, he shares these long-standing techniques so others can create meaningful and lasting work of their own.
Workshop details.
Intermediate to advanced
Participants should already be comfortable with foundational woodworking tools and techniques.
Age 16+
A parent or guardian must sign the waiver on the first day for participants under 18.
Materials included
Workshop wood, consumables and finishing materials are included.

Come workshop ready
Wear closed-toe shoes and clothing with no loose fabric. Long hair must be secured in a bun. Bring safety glasses and hearing protection if you have them. NewMakeIt provides safety glasses, earplugs and other required safety equipment for anyone who needs them.
