Shape the steel, form the handle, create the candle socket and refine the finished piece before taking it home.
What you will learn.
Build practical beginner blacksmithing skills while completing each stage of your candle holder with close instructor guidance.
Work hot steel safely
Learn how to heat steel to a workable temperature and safely move between the forge and anvil.
Taper and shape the steel
Use hammer control to move material, draw out sections and establish the proportions of your piece.
Form curves and the handle
Bend and shape hot steel to create the distinctive forged handle and functional form.
Complete the candle holder
Create the candle-holding section, refine the shape and finish your forged piece.

Guidance at the forge
Mark Reeves guides participants through safe forge use, hammer control, shaping and finishing. The small class size allows time for individual guidance throughout the workshop.

Beginner Level 1
No previous blacksmithing experience is required.
Age 16+
A parent or guardian must sign the waiver for participants under 18.
Materials included
Steel, forge tools, workshop consumables and required safety equipment are included.

Come workshop ready
Wear a long-sleeved shirt and long pants made from natural fibres, plus closed-toe sturdy shoes, preferably leather. Secure long hair and avoid loose clothing or accessories. NewMakeIt provides the required safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection and other workshop PPE.
