Learn the basics of centring clay and shaping a simple vessel on the pottery wheel with supportive, step-by-step guidance. No previous pottery experience is needed.
From prepared clay to a wheel-thrown piece.
Shelley guides you through the wheel one step at a time so you can focus on the feel of the clay and enjoy trying something new.
Meet the wheel
Start with prepared clay and learn the basic wheel controls, posture and hand position.
Centre the clay
Practice bringing the clay into balance with steady hands and supportive guidance.
Shape a vessel
Open and raise the clay to create a simple form during your wheel time.
We finish it for you
NewMakeIt trims, clear glazes and fires your selected piece for pickup in approximately two weeks.

Your starting point
Beginner Level 1
No previous wheel experience is needed. Shelley demonstrates each step and provides hands-on guidance as you centre and shape the clay.
This is an introductory wheel experience focused on trying the process and building confidence in a relaxed setting.

Affordable workshops for adults 55+
Registration for this workshop is $34.95 + HST for adults aged 55 and over through funding from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program.
Please bring valid photo identification to confirm eligibility for the Creative 55+ registration rate.
What is included
Prepared NewMakeIt clay, wheel use, studio tools, instructor guidance, staff trimming, clear glazing and firings are included. Outside clay is not used in this workshop.
Workshop details
- One three-hour session
- Maximum eight participants
- Participants throw; staff trims and glazes
- Pickup approximately two weeks later
Come workshop ready
Wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing that can get messy. Do not wear loose clothing. Long hair must be tied back. Shorter nails make working with clay easier.
