Beginner Level 1
Carve it in wax. Finish it in silver.
Design a ring or pendant in jeweller’s wax. Your model is then sent out for professional casting—you will not cast it yourself—before returning to refine and polish the finished metal piece.
This workshop is not held at NewMakeIt’s 621 Timothy Street facility. Please go directly to the Gorham Street location.
Move from model to metal.
Wax gives you the freedom to carve volume, texture and detail before the design is cast.
Your finished project
A cast ring or pendant
Carve an original wax model during the first session. It is sent to a professional casting service, then you return to refine and polish the cast piece during the second session.
Understand the casting process.
Experience the stages that take a jewellery idea from wax to metal. The casting stage is completed for you by a professional service, not by participants during the workshop.
Develop the design
Choose a ring or pendant direction and consider scale, thickness and wearable proportions.
Shape the wax
Use wax files and carving tools to create three-dimensional forms, texture and detail.
Prepare for casting
Smooth the model, check weak areas and prepare it for professional casting. The fee is estimated from its final wax weight.
Polish the metal
Return after casting to clean, refine and polish the completed silver piece.
Current workshop
dates and times.
This is a two-session workshop. Registration includes both dates shown below.
Jim Travers
Meet Jim.
Guidance through two very different stages
Jim Travers helps participants translate an idea into a strong wax model, then demonstrates the finishing and polishing techniques used after the piece has been cast.
Course fee and casting cost.
Participants do not cast their own rings or pendants. Each finished wax model is sent to a professional casting service. Casting and metal are charged separately based on the final wax weight and metal selected.
Workshop details.
Beginner Level 1
No previous jewellery-making or wax-carving experience is required.
Age 16+
Participants under 18 require parental consent and a signed waiver.
Maximum six participants
A small group supports detailed carving and finishing help.
Attend both sessions
The first session creates the wax model; the second finishes the cast metal piece.
Your piece is professionally cast for you
You will carve the wax model, but you will not perform the metal casting during this workshop. Your model is sent to a professional casting service. The casting and metal fee is not included in the workshop price and is calculated from the final wax weight and metal selected. Budget approximately $40; larger, wider, heavier or multiple pieces will cost more.
Ready to carve your own design?
Book the two-session schedule above and plan to attend both dates.
Please review our class cancellation policy before registering.
