Use controlled hammer work to form the blade and distinctive loop handle, then refine and protect the finished steel.

Your finished project

A hand-forged Viking knife

Create a compact working knife inspired by historic forged forms, complete with a twisted loop handle and heat-treated blade.

What you will learn.

Follow the steel from its first heat through final finishing with close instructor guidance.

01 / Draw

Establish the blade

Heat and draw out 5160 carbon steel to create the knife's basic length and profile.

02 / Form

Upset, twist and bend

Build the loop handle and control the transitions between handle and blade.

03 / Refine

File the bevels

Use hand files and a filing jig to refine the blade and prepare it for heat treatment.

04 / Finish

Harden, temper and protect

Heat treat the blade, then finish the steel with linseed oil and paraffin.

Guidance at the forge

Mark Reeves leads participants through safe forge use, hammer control, blade shaping and finishing. The small class size allows time for individual guidance at every stage.

Beginner Level 1

No previous blacksmithing experience is required.

Age 16+

A parent or guardian must sign the waiver on the first day for participants under 18.

Materials included

The 5160 steel, forge tools, workshop consumables and required safety equipment are included.

Location

NewMakeIt, 621 Timothy Street, Newmarket, Ontario.

Come workshop ready

Wear a long-sleeved shirt and long pants made from natural fibres, plus closed-toe sturdy shoes, preferably leather. Secure long hair and avoid loose clothing or accessories. NewMakeIt provides the required safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection and other workshop PPE.
