No. Workshops are open to everyone, and the workshop fee covers your registration. An Access Pass is only required when you want to use NewMakeIt independently outside a workshop.

Not for workshops marked Beginner Level 1 or “No experience needed.” Read the individual listing before registering because some Level 2, intermediate and certification workshops assume particular skills.

Levels are helpful guidance rather than universal prerequisites unless the listing says otherwise. Level 1 introduces the basics. Level 2 assumes that you already understand the tools and foundational techniques. Intermediate workshops expect greater independence. Experimental workshops are approachable ways to try a project or technique.

Standard project materials, use of tools and instructor guidance are normally included unless the listing states otherwise. Casting, specialty materials, upgrades or additional material may cost extra.

Usually, with instructor or staff approval. Pottery clay is the exception: all clay used at NewMakeIt must be purchased from NewMakeIt. We also sell some materials on site and can order materials for you when needed.

Yes, but the instructor must approve it. They may adjust or refuse an idea because of safety, available time, material, equipment, workshop goals or the participant’s experience.

Wear closed-toed shoes and clothing suitable for the activity. Tie back long hair and avoid loose clothing, jewellery or accessories near tools and equipment. Welding and other higher-risk activities have additional clothing and PPE requirements listed in their workshop descriptions.

Most non-pottery projects go home at the end of the workshop. Pottery is normally ready in approximately two weeks. Wax-carving jewellery participants return for the final class after casting to polish and finish their piece. Always check the workshop listing for project-specific timing.

Please arrive on time. Anyone more than 15 minutes late may be refused entry without credit because missed safety instructions cannot always be repeated. If you know you will be late, call NewMakeIt as soon as possible. An exception may be made depending on the workshop and instructor.

There are no make-up sessions. Depending on the workshop and what was missed, you may not be able to continue safely or complete the project. CNC and blacksmithing sessions cannot normally be missed. Woodworking may be easier to catch up in, but catching up is not guaranteed.

In a six-week wheel-throwing course, missing either the first or second class may be manageable; missing both means you may have no pieces available for trimming and decorating.

Usually, if you contact NewMakeIt before the workshop. The replacement participant must meet the workshop’s age, skill, safety and eligibility requirements.

HST is added at checkout. Any casting, specialty material or other additional charge will be explained in the workshop listing.

You need an active Access Pass or Day Pass, a general facility safety tour and a more detailed orientation for every area you plan to use. You must also demonstrate that you can work safely and competently. If you are not ready for independent use, you will need a relevant workshop or paid one-on-one training.

Laser cutters, the CNC router and blacksmithing currently require NewMakeIt certification. Certification does not include free studio access; an active Access Pass or Day Pass is still required.

Hobbyist, Professional and Entrepreneur Access Passes include all studio areas, including pottery, subject to the pass schedule and any required training, certification or equipment booking.

No. Pottery is the only area with its own area-specific pass. A Pottery Access Pass covers pottery only; General Access Passes cover the full facility. There are no separate Woodshop or Metal Shop passes.

A Day Pass can be used in any available area after you complete the required approvals or certifications. It may also be used for pottery, but pottery normally requires at least two visits, one to make and another to glaze after bisque firing, so another Day Pass may be required.

Laser cutters and CNC equipment require booking. Other areas may be used during your pass hours when they are open and not occupied by a workshop. Workshops always take priority.

Access does not include unlimited machine use. Laser and CNC access includes a Digital Fabrication time allowance based on the pass, with fees for additional time. 3D and UV printing have material charges, and forge gas is charged separately. See the current allowances and rates on the Access Pass page.

Guests may observe. With staff approval, a guest may help lift, move or hold a large project, particularly in the woodshop or metal shop. Only the approved Access Pass holder may operate the machinery. Anyone participating independently needs their own pass and approval.

Limited, labelled project storage is available. An active project may receive a five-day Green Pass. You may reset it at the front desk before it expires. An expired project moves through a three-day Parking Pass and then a two-day Tow Pass. Escalating storage fees apply, and work may be discarded after the final deadline.

Monthly racks, lockers and pottery cubbies may also be available separately. Ask staff about current availability and rates.

No. Everyone must continue following safety, material, cleaning and booking rules. Staff may stop unsafe work or suspend access when policies are not followed.

A limited amount of NewMakeIt clay, studio glaze, standard firing and instructor guidance are included unless the listing states otherwise.

A Pottery or General Access Pass includes use of studio tools, studio glazes and standard kiln firing. Clay is purchased separately from NewMakeIt.

Using outside clay in the studio is grounds for immediate termination of your Access Pass without a refund. NewMakeIt’s paid outside-firing service is separate and does not give customers permission to work with outside clay in the studio.

Yes. Non-members may pay to have pottery made elsewhere fired through NewMakeIt’s outside-firing service. You do not need an Access Pass when you are dropping off work for firing only.

The clay body and every glaze used must be suitable for Cone 5 or 6 firing. You must provide enough information for staff to confirm that the materials are compatible with NewMakeIt’s firing schedule. Unknown or unsuitable work may be refused. Firing fees apply, firing results are not guaranteed and the customer is responsible for damage caused by their clay or glaze.

This service includes kiln firing only. It does not include studio access, use of studio glazes or permission to work with outside clay at NewMakeIt.

Yes, if you can confirm it is suitable for Cone 5 or 6 firing. If you are unsure, speak with staff before using it. Amaco Palladium, Georgies Jube Jube and Tuckers Snowflake are prohibited.

A $70 penalty applies when glaze runs onto and damages a kiln shelf. If clay or glaze causes more serious damage, you are responsible for the full repair or replacement cost, including kiln replacement when necessary.

No. Cracking, warping, glaze variation and breakage are inherent risks of ceramics. NewMakeIt cannot guarantee that a piece will survive firing or produce a particular result.

Your finished workshop pottery is normally ready for pickup approximately two weeks after the glazing workshop. Timing may change because of kiln schedules, drying time, technical issues or unusually busy periods.

Pottery submitted by an Access Pass holder is normally ready in approximately two weeks. Larger, taller or awkwardly shaped pieces may take longer because staff must wait for a kiln load in which the piece can be positioned and fired safely.

Workshop pieces are held for 30 days after they are ready. Access Pass holders should collect finished pieces within two weeks. If you are away or cannot collect on time, tell staff and we will make a reasonable extension, you do not need to provide the reason.

If your piece was placed on the correct firing shelf while your pass was active, NewMakeIt will complete that firing even if the pass expires before the kiln is loaded. If you need to return to glaze, continue working or submit another firing after expiry, you may renew your pass, purchase a Day Pass, pay the applicable separate firing fee or collect the unfinished piece.

Not without paying for the required access or firing service. This applies to Day Pass users and to former Access Pass holders whose passes have expired.

Yes, but there is no pottery-only Day Pass and ceramics rarely finish in one day. You must purchase a sleeve of NewMakeIt clay, and you will normally need another active Day Pass or Access Pass to return for glazing.

Complete the woodshop safety tour and pass a competency check. If you cannot yet demonstrate safe independent use, take a relevant workshop or book one-on-one training.

Yes. Material must be suitable for the equipment and free of hidden nails, screws, staples, metal fragments, stone, concrete, excessive dirt and other debris. Reclaimed, pallet, wet, heavily warped, painted, pressure-treated or unidentified material requires staff inspection and approval.

No. Staff may approve questionable material after inspection, but you remain responsible if it damages equipment or triggers the SawStop through negligence.

A negligent activation carries a penalty of approximately $300 to cover the brake and related costs. There is no penalty when the system activates to prevent an actual injury. Staff review the circumstances of every activation.

Members provide their own project consumables. NewMakeIt provides the standard blades for the table saw, mitre saw and horizontal bandsaw. Other shared consumables may sometimes be available, but availability and sharpness are not guaranteed.

Only water-based finishes are permitted. The paint booth is available during warmer months because it is not fully insulated. Speak with staff before beginning finishing work.

Complete the metal-shop safety tour and pass a welding competency check. If you are not ready for independent use, take a welding workshop or book one-on-one training.

Shielding gas, welding wire and electrodes are included. Members supply their own project metal and other project-specific consumables.

Bring your own properly fitting welding helmet, welding gloves and welding jacket or apron. NewMakeIt provides safety glasses and hearing protection. Some shared welding PPE may exist, but availability and fit are not guaranteed.

Closed-toed shoes, long pants and natural-fibre clothing are required. Long hair must be tied back, and loose clothing or jewellery must be secured or removed.

Only with staff approval, and the coating must be safely removed before welding or cutting. Unidentified metal also requires approval.

Take the relevant blacksmithing workshop, then return on a separate day for certification with the instructor. The certification appointment is currently free. Experienced blacksmiths may contact NewMakeIt to book a certification assessment without repeating beginner training.

Yes, with a General Access Pass or Day Pass. Forge use is currently available on a drop-in basis while demand is low, but you must pay for the gas you use. Contact staff if you need to confirm availability.

Yes. Complete the applicable NewMakeIt certification before independent use. The machines must also be booked, and users must follow all monitoring and material rules taught in certification.

Yes, after staff confirm that the material is safe, identifiable and compatible with the machine. NewMakeIt also sells some materials and may be able to order material for you.

No. Submit an STL or 3MF file and NewMakeIt staff will run the print. Outside filament may be accepted only after staff approve the material and filament type.

If a faulty file causes the failure, the customer pays for the material used. If NewMakeIt’s setup or equipment caused the failure, NewMakeIt will reprint the job.

NewMakeIt staff only. Customers provide a print-ready CMYK vector file or a high-resolution image. Staff can prepare artwork for an additional fee, send a proof and print only after the customer approves it.

Yes, after staff approve the material, surface and size. NewMakeIt may also have suitable blanks for sale. Customer-supplied objects are accepted at the customer’s risk; damage is reviewed case by case.

Not yet. NewMakeIt will offer flexible items after flexible white ink becomes available. Standard white ink may crack or peel when repeatedly bent.

Hand-wash only. Do not place the item in a dishwasher, soak it or use alcohol or harsh abrasive cleaners on the printed surface. Printed areas must not contact food or the mouth. Durability depends on the object and surface, and NewMakeIt does not guarantee durability on customer-supplied items.

Yes. All experience levels are welcome, and the instructor adjusts guidance to the participant’s level. You may bring a reference image for instructor approval.

Anyone who completed Stained Glass Level 1 or has equivalent stained-glass experience. Level 2 assumes that you already understand the foundational tools and techniques.

NewMakeIt posts specific studio-time sessions on the website for advance registration. Participants must have completed Level 1 or demonstrate equivalent experience. Shared tools are available, an instructor is present to help as needed, and participants bring or purchase their glass and consumables.

All NewMakeIt jewellery workshops are hosted at Market Candle Company, 1100 Gorham Street, Unit 16, Newmarket, Ontario. Check the listing before leaving so you arrive at the correct venue.

No. Finished wax pieces are sent out for casting. The casting charge is based on the finished weight and is invoiced and paid before the final class.

Return for the next scheduled class to polish and finish the cast piece, then take it home. If you miss that class, you may arrange pickup of the unfinished piece. You may be allowed into another finishing class if space is available, but this is not guaranteed.

Anyone may register. Participants aged 55 and older receive the subsidized price; participants under 55 pay the regular workshop price.

There is no overall limit on the number of subsidized workshops an eligible participant may register for, subject to availability.

Yes. A support person may observe without registering or paying, but please contact NewMakeIt before attending. If the support person will participate in the activity, they need their own registration.

NewMakeIt offers birthday parties, corporate team building, school and community-group visits, and custom private workshops. Capacity depends on the activity, so contact us to discuss the group and project.

Pricing is normally per participant with a minimum group charge. Standard materials are usually included; custom projects receive a separate quote. Full payment confirms the booking, and groups should inquire at least two weeks in advance.

Private bookings are non-refundable unless NewMakeIt cancels. With more than 72 hours’ notice, the group may move the booking or receive credit. The minimum group charge still applies if fewer people attend.

Food, non-alcoholic drinks and decorations require staff approval in advance. Alcohol is not included as an allowed option. The group is responsible for following the agreed setup and cleanup instructions.

Yes. Advance registration is required so the team can plan for the right tools and volunteer skills. Repair Café is currently for York Region residents.

One item per registered guest. Every additional item requires another registration. You may bring a maximum of one additional person unless NewMakeIt approves an exception.

Volunteer specialties include bicycles, general household items, small appliances, electronics, jewellery and small sewing repairs such as tears and buttons.

Repair Café cannot accept broken zippers, hems or alterations, gas-powered machinery, items containing gas, oil, chemicals, pesticides or other hazardous materials, large kitchen appliances, sewing machines or single-serve coffee machines such as Keurig and Nespresso. Some jewellery repairs depend on the fixers available.

The volunteer repair work is free. Visitors must supply any necessary replacement parts or materials.

No. Fixers do their best but may decline an item, may not be able to complete a repair and are not required to reassemble an already-disassembled appliance that cannot be fixed. Visitors bring items at their own risk and must take unrepaired items home.

Yes. Walk in during open hours, check in at the front desk and a staff member can give you a tour. Access to active studios may depend on safety, workshops and staff availability.

Age requirements vary by workshop and studio. Woodshop and metal-shop independent use are generally 18+. In some circumstances, a person aged 16 or 17 may be approved after staff speak with their parent or guardian. Younger participants require a registered parent or guardian or special permission. Always follow the age rule in the specific workshop listing.

Applications are open to makers selling handmade products, artists and designers, and food vendors with all required permits. Eligibility and product restrictions may vary by event.

You will receive an acceptance email with a payment deadline. Your space is not confirmed until payment is received, and vendor fees are non-refundable.

An online gift card can be used for workshop purchases on the website. A physical gift card can be used in person for anything NewMakeIt sells, including workshops.

No. NewMakeIt is not a registered charity and cannot issue charitable donation receipts. Donors may choose the amount they wish to give.

Business sponsors receive a standard sponsorship invoice or receipt, not a charitable donation receipt. Sponsorship may qualify as an advertising or business expense depending on the sponsor’s circumstances; sponsors should confirm this with their accountant.

Possibly, but every physical donation must be approved before drop-off. Contact NewMakeIt with a description, condition and photographs when possible. Please do not leave unapproved items at the facility.

Every project receives a custom quote based on design work, setup, machine time, materials, finishing and quantity.

NewMakeIt will redo staff- or equipment-caused failures. The customer pays when a faulty file causes the failure, and customer-supplied material is used at the customer’s risk. Staff review each incident before deciding the appropriate remedy.
