Description:
Day 1: Throwing on the Wheel
Participants will be introduced to the pottery wheel and learn the basic techniques of centering clay, opening, and pulling up walls to create cylindrical forms. They will practice throwing simple vessels like cups and bowls.
Day 2: Trimming and Altering
Participants will learn how to trim excess clay from their thrown pieces to refine the shape and create a foot for stability. They will also explore altering techniques such as adding handles or decorative elements to their forms.
Day 3: Throwing on the Wheel
Building upon the skills learned in the previous week, participants will continue to practice throwing on the wheel, focusing on more complex forms like vases and pitchers. They will learn techniques for shaping and thinning walls.
Day 4: Trimming and Altering
Participants will further refine their trimming skills and explore advanced altering techniques. They will have the opportunity to experiment with altering the shape, texture, and design of their pieces.
Day 5: Glazing
Participants will be introduced to glazing techniques and learn about different types of glazes, their application methods, and firing temperatures. They will select glazes and apply them to their bisque-fired pottery.
Day 6: Glazing
Participants will continue to apply glazes to their pottery, exploring different layering techniques and decorative effects. They will learn about glaze interactions and how to achieve desired results through experimentation.
Throughout the workshop, participants will receive guidance from the instructor, who will provide demonstrations, hands-on assistance, and feedback on their progress. By the end of the 6-week pottery workshop, participants will have gained foundational skills in wheel throwing, trimming, altering, and glazing, and will have created a collection of their own handmade pottery.
Meet the Instructors:
A sometimes Pottery Instructor, sometimes Illustrator, and self-taught Screen Printer, Catherine Harasymiw currently works out of her studio in Newmarket, Ontario. Spiriting a BFA in Drawing and Painting away from the clutches of OCAD U, Catherine’s gone on to participate in a number of local, and distant art shows, including “Kinesis” a show curated by Twist Gallery in Toronto, and “Portal to Enigma”, a group show in New York City. Many of her slow-fading event posters can be found adorning the lofty telephone poles of York Region and the Greater Toronto Area.
