While the origins of these knifes aren't well known, one can imagine them being fashioned by the countless number of American Hobos who walked the rails during the Great Depression of the 1930’s.
Trivets are used to protect the surface of tables from hot serving pots and pans. Watch metal be forged into this useful household item. Today a trivet can be forged from available stock metal, but in the 19th century it was quite common for a trivet to be made out of a horseshoe.
